Recommended boundaries at Tallinn cemeteries

In case of a new burial place one should think about making its boundary. The cemetery should be seen as the whole, therefore we recommend to follow the principle of maintaining the peculiarity of the cemetery when selecting the boundary of the grave.

When planning Liiva Cemetery the principle of maintaining the intact forest land has been followed in bypaths of the sections allotted for burial places, the bypaths are very wide. In sections used so far placement of graves in straight lines and burial places surrounded with rigid concrete edges dominate. There are also wide sections with line graves at the Liiva Cemetery.

There should remain the effect of the natural forest at the Metsakalmistu Cemetery. In design the crosses, fences, placement of edges, monumental gravestones, cast concrete and "food tables" have been avoided. The maximum height allowed for the stone is 1,5 m but for the boundaries of the burial places naturalness is still recommended - lawn edges, covering with moss, flowered edges, hedges, granite edges with the width of ca 10-15 cm, etc.

Pirita Cemetery with the area of 0,8 ha is located in Pirita District. The cemetery is a heritage protection area and new grave boundaries are not allowed to build here but restoration is allowed.

Pärnamäe Cemetery is characterised by varied landscape, nature typical of waste land, greenery of pines, also some rare birches and aspens with he varying hills. It has been attempted to take that into account when designing the cemetery while having the principle of naturalness as the main orientation. Burying in straight bypaths and lines has been avoided. Rigid edges of the grave and the gravestones and structures that spoil the general look are not recommended here. Making limestone edges with orderly setting is common at the Pärnamäe Cemetery. Limestone terraces are especially impressive at the cemetery with rough relief.

Possessors of the burial places who wish to build grave structures (boundaries, grave marks, hedges, trees) must turn to the management of the cemetery and submit the description or the drawing of the structure to be built for coordination and obtain the relevant permit.
